Minnesota Fall Color Guide by Bendare Outdoors

2022.09.28

The colors they are a-changin'! Minnesota is displaying some brilliant colors this fall. Much of the state is between 10-50% and changing fast. Learn more about the changing colors, see helpful fall color resources, and view the fall color guide for common trees in Minnesota.

BENDARE PRO TIP: The timing and intensity of the peak colors are mostly affected by the longer, cooler nights and weather, but tree genetics and location also play a role.

Timing and Intensity:

  1. Longer and cooler nights: As the nights get longer and cooler, the chlorophyll production in the leaves slows down. Once this production stops, the chlorophyll is destroyed, and the leaves begin their color change. This is the biggest factor when determining the start of the color change.
  2. Weather and soil moisture: The temperature and the amount of moisture determine the intensity and vividness of autumn colors. This includes the weather leading up to the start of the change and during the change.

Best colors: warm/sunny days and cool nights leading up to and during the change; adequate rainfall and moist soil throughout the year

Color Delays: late spring; summer droughts

Less colors: warm period during fall because the leaves drop sooner
  3. Tree Species: The genetics of the tree, based on its species, also play a role on the timing (e.g. ash and balsam poplar are some of the first to begin changing).
  4. Location: Trees on the edge of cooler, low-lying areas change quicker (e.g. the north shore of Lake Superior).

Tent Camping with Tarp Inside

2022.09.13

Fall is one of the best times to get out camping and enjoy Minnesota's countless adventures like fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, boating, BWCA trips, and more. Nothing compares to a warm autumn day, taking in the vibrant colors and rich smells with little to no bugs. But you need to be ready for those cooler, wet days that are also inevitable.

BENDARE PRO TIP: Tent camping with tarp inside! Keep yourself and the inside of your tent dry by placing a tarp inside the tent. You can even have the inside tarp up along the walls a little for added protection.

A lightweight tent footprint or tarp, placed between the tent and the ground, can also be used to protect the tent from damage and provide added insulation. But by having a tarp inside, you will no longer need to worry about water finding its way between your ground protection and the bottom of your tent, one of the main causes of water-related tent issues. Using both methods at the same time is recommended for maximum protection.

A dry camper is a happy camper!

Below you will find some helpful resources for getting out camping this fall season.

Minnesota Featured Resource: Fall Color Finder

2022.09.06

The nights are getting longer and cooler, which means it's that time of year in Minnesota when the trees begin putting on their annual color show. The Fall Color Finder by the MNDNR is essential when it comes to keeping up with all the changing colors!

Resource Highlights:

The Fall Color Finder has a color-coded map of Minnesota based on the percent of peak color the area is experiencing. There is also a filtered search of Minnesota State Parks by region or name. Not only does this provide the percent of peak color for the park, it also lists some tips on the best viewing areas and the current color observations around the park. Don't miss this if you are planning on visiting a State Park to view the colors this season. This park detail also gives you a better understanding of what the areas around the park are most likely experiencing as well.

Timing and Intensity:

BENDARE PRO TIP: The timing and intensity of the peak colors are mostly affected by the longer, cooler nights and weather, but tree genetics and location also play a role.

  1. Longer and cooler nights: As the nights get longer and cooler, the chlorophyll production in the leaves slows down. Once this production stops, the chlorophyll is destroyed, and the leaves begin their color change. This is the biggest factor when determining the start of the color change.

Featured Resource LakeFinder Tool | Bendare Outdoors

2022.08.15

It's hard to pick just one, but the LakeFinder tool by the MNDNR is one of my favorite resources!

LakeFinder has information on over 4,500 lakes and rivers in Minnesota. Search by name, map, find near me, and favorites. Information includes fish species, lake surveys, lake access, depth maps, fish stocking reports, special regulations, ice in/out dates, fish consumption guidelines, and more.

Watch and learn more about the LakeFinder...

BENDARE PRO TIP: The desktop version is best (even on mobile) because there are more features.

Resource Highlights:
  1. Fisheries Lake Survey and Status of Fishery: Survey charts include the number of fish sampled, organized by size, and a detailed write-up of the latest status of the fishery. Use this information to get the best idea of the fish species in the lake. Note: The fish species list on the lake profile's main landing page includes all historic fish and may not represent the current state of the fishery.
  2. Fish Stocking Reports: The total size, number, pounds, and species stocked over the last 10 years.
  3. Depth Maps: View depth contours on the state-wide interactive map when available, or on the PDF versions within the lake profiles.
  4. Special Regulations, Invasives, and Notes: Lake profiles include special fishing regulations when applicable, a list of invasive species to be aware of on the selected water body, and any special notes like road construction or lake access updates.
  5. Interactive Map: Use this tool on full-screen mode to easily search areas of interest (e.g. the route on your next Boundary Waters trip). Click on water bodies for the full profile.

Foraging Morels | Bendare Outdoors

2022.05.01

BENDARE PRO TIP: Spring is the time to look for morels, when daytime temperatures are in the 60s and nighttime lows are in the 40s. Morels prefer soil temperatures between 55-62 degrees. They show up around the same time as marigolds, trillium, and dandelions.

Foraging in Minnesota is allowed for personal use in state parks, state forests, wildlife management areas (WMA), scientific and natural areas (SNA), and aquatic management areas (AMA).

Full plants and flowers cannot be harvested in these areas, but edible fruits (like blueberries and raspberries), mushrooms, and edible seeds are all allowed to be collected for personal use.

These rules do not apply to private land, so make sure you have permission from the landowner.
